Mathematician Steven Strogatz has pioneered the study of synchrony and spontaneous order at every level of the universe. His research explores the common ground between such phenomena as human circadian rhythms, firefly synchronicity, and small-world networks in nature and society. The recipient of numerous teaching awards, Strogatz is author of Sync: The Emerging Science of Spontaneous Order and The Calculus of Friendship, to be published in 2009. He is currently Jacob Gould Schurman Professor of Applied Mathematics at Cornell University.
