Michael Shanks is an archaeologist whose work has been highly influential in archaeological theory and practice. He is currently the Omar and Althea Hoskins Professor of Classical Archaeology at Stanford University, where he co-directs the Stanford Humanties Lab. He also directs the Archaeology Center's Metamedia Lab, which explores the materiality of media and the role of history and memory in art and artifact. Shanks is the author or co-author of several books, including Re-Constructing Archaeology, Experiencing the Past, and Theatre/Archaeology.
